KWHA to Investigate Poor Management of Government Built Estates in Ilorin Metropolis





The Kwara State House of Assembly Committee on Land,Housing and Urban Development has been mandated to look into management of the State built Housing Estates in Ilorin Metropolis, with a view to unraveling the causes of decay infrastructure in the affected Housing Estate.

The Legislature took the decision on Wednesday in Ilorin, following a Motion raised by a Member representing Okuta/ Yashikira Constituency Hon. Adamu Usman on the poor infrastructure in Mandate 1, 2 Housing Estates, built during the administration of former Governor Bukola Saraki.
Reading the resolutions of the House, the Deputy Speaker, Elder Mathew Okedare who presided over the sitting, said the in depth investigation by the Committee would help in proffering appropriate and enduring solutions to the problem.
Hon. Adamu had while moving the Motion, noted with displeasure that the inhabitants of the two Estates, had been contending with lack of water supply, poor road network, collapsed fence, stressing that the State Housing Corporation, charged with the duty of managing Estates had not perform its statutory function in respect of the two Housing Estates, thereby compounding the standard of living of the residents of the area.
He then called on the House to urge the State government to empower the State Housing Corporation in providing infrastructure in the Estates, to alleviate the suffering of the occupants of the Estates.
In his contribution, a member representing Ojomu/ Balogun Constituency Hon. Saheed Popoola said management of Estates be redesigned to meet contemporary challenges of accelerating development of Cities.
This, he suggested would ensure that occupants of such Estate establish Community Development Association, so as not to rely on government for provision of basic infrastructure.
Hons. Felicia Owolabi and Isiaku Aliyu Adams representing Ekiti and Edu Constituencies respectively, noted with displeasure that government built Housing Estates were gradually turning into slum, due to lack of proper management by the State Housing Corporation and called on government to address the problems promptly.
The Committee is expected to submit its report within two Weeks.
Meanwhile, a bill for a law to amend the Town Planning and Country Planning Law,passed through first reading, at the floor of the House, while an executive bill for a law to provide for Public Infrastructure Maintenance Support Levy and other connected Matters could not pass through the first reading, as it was unanimously rejected by Members when it was put to vote by the Presiding Deputy Speaker.
