Nigeria IT agency to expand e-conference to cover other African countries

The Director General of Nigeria’s Information and Technology agency, NITDA, Isa Pantami, has said that by the year 2020, the annual e-Nigeria Conference, Exhibition and Award would become the African Information Technology Conference and Award.
The objective of this is to integrate other African countries into the conference.
He disclosed this at the inauguration of the Local Organising Committees, (LOCs) for e-Nigeria and Gulf Information Technology Exhibition, (GITEX) 2019 on Thursday in Abuja.
Mr Pantami explained that the management of the agency is discussing with the NITDA Governing Board to consider the proposal of co-opting other African countries to the conference and make it a continental event.
“We have a lot to learn from other African countries that are doing extremely well in the IT sector. This will create a platform form for peer review between Nigeria and some other selected African countries like Kenya, Rwanda, Morocco, Ghana, Botswana and host of others,” he said.
According to him, apart from the budget presentation, which President Mohammdu Buhari attends yearly, it is only e-Nigeria that can boast of playing host to the president on two successive occasions.
The e-Nigeria Conference, Exhibitions and Awards is NITDA’s annual flagship event that brings stakeholders together in the Nigeria IT ecosystem while the GITEX is the biggest technology show in the Middle East and third biggest technology show in the world, which creates a platform for countries to share knowledge and experience and also provides space for start-ups to meet Venture Capitalists and Angle Investors.
He advised the committee members to come up with disruptive ideas that will challenge the successes recorded in the previous years.
“I have directed my colleagues at NITDA to look at disruptive ideas; we have to challenge our successes after 365 days and do what will surpass the achievements recorded last year. I, therefore, hope these two committees will do intensive and extensive works to see to the successes of these national assignments,”he said.
On e-Nigeria, he said there is the need to consider it as a national assignment and put in their best efforts, with the view of ensuring a successful outing at the event.
He said; “e-Nigeria is very dear to us as IT stakeholders and as a nation, because of the importance the leadership of the country attached to the development of the IT sector. I advise you to see it as a rare opportunity to serve in the committee that has attracted presidential presence in two consecutive years within his first term in office.”
On GITEX, Mr Pantami charged the committee members to improve on Nigeria’s presence at the annual Technology and Investment gathering of over 200, 000 people from more than 145 countries.
The committee must explore new ways through which the country can leverage the opportunities in GITEX to bring the much desired benefits and goals for participating in GITEX.
He said members, who are drawn from across sectors, are to think out new ways of bolstering the country’s image globally and seek investments in the technology sector, where Nigeria and her growing number of startups have demonstrated great potential.

UK, U.S. urge Tanzania to respect ‘due process’ after journalist arrested

Britain and the United States on Friday urged Tanzania to guarantee due process of law for a journalist arrested on charges that his lawyer and rights groups described as being politically motivated.
Erick Kabendera was charged on Monday with money laundering, tax evasion and leading organised crime.
He was arrested the previous week over what the Police said were issues concerning his citizenship.
Press freedom in Tanzania has deteriorated since President John Magufuli was elected in 2015, rights groups say.
His administration has shut down newspapers, arrested opposition leaders and activists and restricted political rallies.
The government rejects charges that its policies are authoritarian.
“The irregular handling of the arrest, detention and indictment of investigative journalist Erick Kabendera, including the fact that he was denied access to a lawyer in the early stages of his detention, is contrary to the Criminal Procedures Act,’’ the U.S. and British government said in a joint statement.
Kabendera, 39, has written for national and international publications, including The Guardian and The Times of London.
He published a story last month in the regional newspaper The East African about purported internal divisions within the ruling party before a presidential election in 2020.
The questioning since his arrest indicated his arrest and prosecution are linked to his work as a journalist, Kabendera’s lawyer, Jebra Kambole, said on Monday.
The case has been adjourned until Aug. 19, when it will come up for mention.
Money laundering is not a bailable offence.
Government spokesman, Hassan Abbasi, did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Nigeria Prisons chief visits Edo over jail break attempt to free kidnappers

DCG Aremu Tajudeen, the Deputy Controller-General of Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) in charge of Operations, said the organisation had evolved strategic measures to strengthen security around all the prisons across the country.
This was contained in a statement issued in Benin on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer of Edo command.
Tajudeen was in Benin to assess the security situation in various prisons in the state, especially the Medium Security Prison (MSP) Oko, Benin where an imminent jail break to release kidnap suspects was recently averted.
He urged members of staff of the command to continue to maintain professionalism, remain alert and poised to deal with any situation.
“Every form of negligence or compromise should be avoided and strict discipline should be sustained and enforced as always,” he was quoted to have said.
He expressed satisfaction with the synergy and mutual support among the various security agencies in the state.

Tajudeen was accompanied on the visit by the Assistant Controller-General of Prisons, ACG Zone “G”, Mrs Okereke Clementina, the state Controller of Prisons, Mr Joseph Usendiah, among other senior officers.

Former Nigerian bank MD jailed for fraud

A Lagos State High court has sent a former Managing Director of New Prudential Mortgage Bank Limited, Adetunji Abudu, to two years imprisonment for N195m fraud.
A statement signed by Nigeria’s anti- graft agency, EFCC, on Thursday, said Mr Abudu was arraigned on a four-count charge before Justice I.N. Buba.
The EFCC said the trial began on April 12, 2016.
It said his offense is contrary to the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2004, Section 18(8) and punishable under Section 18 (11) of the BOFIA LFN 2004.
According to the commission, Mr Abudu obtained a N35 million loan and another N110 million loan without authorisation while being the Managing Director of the bank.
It added that the former New Prudent Bank boss also approved the setting off of a N50 million loan granted to Total Access Concept Limited by Addoser Micro-finance Bank, which was also not authorised in accordance with the bank’s policy and in contravention of BOFIA 2004.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him by the prosecution, thereby leading to his full trial.
In the course of the trial, the lead prosecution counsel, A.B.C. Oziokor called seven prosecution witnesses and tendered several documents that were admitted in evidence by the court, while the defence presented five witnesses.
Both parties consequently adopted their written addresses, after the closure of the case.
Ruling
Delivering his judgment on Justice Buba found the defendant guilty on counts one, two, three and four, as charged.
The judge further held that “The court has considered the fact that the convict is a first-time offender, a family man, and a breadwinner.
“The court will be lenient, given that the convict is a first offender. But this will also send the right signal that it is this type of attitude that has led our financial institutions into trouble.
“This is a matter the convict should not have allowed going through the rigors of a criminal trial, having been given the opportunity to refund the money. But he still remained obstinate.”
The judge, therefore, sentenced the convict to two years on counts one, two, three and four, without an option of fine, with effect from the day of the judgment.
The sentences are to run concurrently.

The convict was ordered to make restitution to the complainant, in accordance with Section 321(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, “if the properties released cannot meet up the amount of exposure to the complainant.”
