Border closure: food prices rise by 50% in Kaduna

Kaduna residents are now feeling the pains arising from the border closure as the prices of food stuff, such as rice, frozen foods and others continue to witness an increase of up to 50 per cent.

Nigeriaireporter recalls that the Federal Government had closed its borders since Aug. 19 in an operation tagged: Ex-Swift Response.
The joint-border closure is meant to check the smuggling of goods into the country, as it’s being supervised by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Police and military personnel and coordinated by the office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
But adding more pain to already hardship being experienced by lots of Nigerians, the prices of some food items from the land borders, especially the Republic of Benin have increased astronomically.
Already, the president had vehemently said that, ” activities of the smugglers have continued to threaten the self-sufficiency already attained due to the administration’s agricultural policies.
“Now that our people in the rural areas are going back to their farms, and the country has saved huge sums of money which would have otherwise been expended on importing rice using our scarce foreign reserves.
“We cannot allow smuggling of the product at such alarming proportions to continue,’’ he had said.
Kaduna residents, are now feeling the pain of the border closure as prices of immediate foods needed by every household has increased.
Nigeriaireporter reporter who went round Kaduna town early Tuesday discovered that, “a bag of rice that was sold around N12, 000 before now sells around N20,000 to N22,000.
Besides, a carton of frozen food (Orobo Chicken) that was sold before at the rate of N7,000 to N7,500 now sells for N12,000 to N13,000.
For every household in Kaduna city, these foods are essential to their survival because they are consumed in large quantity which necessitated their large importation.
A rice retailer, in Kakuri Market Kaduna, Alhaji Madugu Ibrahim lamented the absence of the locally produced rice which was the reason borders were shut, adding that they were not available.
“The local rice is nowhere to be found because they cannot go round. Nigerians eat rice a lot; it is the most consumed food item in the country after bread.
According to him, “The Federal Government should have ensured self-sufficiency in rice before closing the borders. If the local rice is available, there won’t be any increase in the price in the market.
“We have been battling with the price of the local rice because since the borders were shut, the price keeps on increasing,’’ he said.
Another wholesaler, Mr Idomiajoki Kaleja said the pains that arose from the border closure were much more than what the citizen could afford.
According to him, majority of Nigerians are unemployed. They could not afford the cost of food stuff in the market.
He appealed to the federal government to rescind its decision on closure of boarder.
” Unemployment has been on the increase. Most people have noting to show for it. If you don’t have job, you must surely eat. But the means is no longer there.
” What do you expect somebody who does not have job, but is hungry for food to do?
“You are indirectly telling him/her to go and steal. Remember, once you steal, and caught, your punishment will be greater,” he added.
According to him, high rate of kidnapping, assassin, and vices in the country were largely due to lack of jobs.

Management of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria have terminated the employment of 15 staff.

The management also demoted one academic staff on account of conducts bordering on corruption and sexual harassment.
The university, however did not disclose the names of the sacked officers
The federal competition and consumer protection commission commending the university disclosed this in a statement signed by Babatunde Irukera.
The statement read: “The Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) welcomes the bold and decisive action of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) authorities terminating the employment of 15 staff and demotion of one academic staff on account of conducts bordering on corruption and sexual harassment.
“The Commission notes that this strong disciplinary action followed investigations that established unsolicited and unwelcome sexual advances and behaviour toward members of the school community, illegal allocation of, and alteration of grades, and extortion of students.
“These types of conduct materially affect the entire community, diminish scholarship and negatively skew academic outcomes in a manner that violates the rights of targets of the behaviour and victimises others who are invariably indirect victims.
“The inappropriate behaviour undermines the quality and validity of education and questions the credibility of educational outcomes.
“The Commission is further encouraged by ABU’s commitment to a broader and continuing investigation of others within the community.
“ In addition, the Commission commends ABU for this robust and far-reaching effort and the confidence it restores and promotes in our institutions, systems and processes.
“A transparent, fair and just educational community is vital for all members of the community, especially students, and the Commission is keen to ensure that students, as consumers, are afforded the necessary protections, and our campuses are safe and secure always.
“The Commission urges educational institutions to pursue aggressive and open initiatives to ensure harassment, corruption and other vices are eradicated from educational systems.”

Gareth Southgate explains why he called up Abraham and Tomori

England boss Gareth Southgate has opened up on his decision to hand Chelsea duo of Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori an invitation into the Three Lions squad for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and the Czech Republic respectively.

England has been in long battle with Nigeria over the international future of both players, but it seems the English FA finally got one over their Nigerian counterparts.

Southgate who finally listed the players among his 25 man squad for England’s upcoming games, said the players have tremendous qualities to excel with the national team.
Abraham has scored eight goals in all competitions for Chelsea so far this season, a feat that excites the Three Lions boss.
“He is the leading English goalscorer in the league. He is a player that we put into the squad very young at a time when we wanted to have a look at some younger players and change the complexion of what we were doing.”
“It was a bit early for him and now it is brilliant the opportunity he has been given by Frank (Lampard) along with some of the other young English players at Chelsea. It has been fabulous for them.
“He has really grasped this opportunity. It is thoroughly deserved.”
Tomori on his part is enjoying a successful breakthrough season at Chelsea, The 21-year-old has scored once in his four Premier League and has an assist in his two Champions League starts for the Club.
The Canadian-born Nigerian defender has been in U-20 and U-21 for England and was part of the team that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017.
Southgate believed the player has got the right profile to play in the English senior team.
Southgate said: “His profile as a defender fits with the way that international football is. His athleticism is important. He is capable with the ball. It’s a good opportunity for us to take a closer look at him.
“He is in good form so he’ll be feeling confident about himself. He’s played very well for Chelsea against some very good opponents. It’s a great opportunity for him.” He said.
Meanwhile, another Nigerian born player Dele Alli has been left of the October engagement over bad form.

Nineteen pregnant women rescued from ‘baby factories’ in Nigeria

I have slept with seven different men before I discovered I was pregnant,’ victim says

The women were forced into sex slavery

Police rescued 19 pregnant girls who had been kidnapped and raped from properties in Lagos dubbed “baby factories”.
Most of the women, aged between 15 and 28, were abducted and forcibly impregnated so their babies could later be sold.
The girls had been promised employment as domestic workers in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city.

Instead they were held in the properties and forced into sex slavery. They were also forced to bear children which were then sold.
Police officers, acting on a tip off, raided four properties across Lagos on 19 September. They recovered 19 women and four children.
The woman who ran the operation, known as Madam Oluchi, escaped shortly before the raids.
Ms Oluchi is suspected of trafficking girls from south east regions to Lagos.
A police spokesperson said officers had arrested two other women, who worked as nurses in the properties despite having no medical training.
“Two suspects, namely Happiness Ukwuoma... and Sherifat Ipeya... were arrested in connection with the case,” a police spokesperson said according to Nigeriaireporter
“The suspects did not receive formal medical training but operate as nurses.
“The young women were mostly abducted by the suspects for the purpose of getting them pregnant and selling the babies to potential buyers.”
Once the girls had given birth, their children were taken to one of three further properties, where they were sold to buyers.
Ms Oluchi is suspected of selling male infants for 500,000 naira (£1,121) and females for 300,000 naira (£672).
A manhunt has been launched for the suspect, who is a mother-of-five.
“My friend... called me to say that someone was looking for house help. I borrowed money to come to Lagos,” one of the rescued women said, according to Nigeriaireporter.
“One woman came to pick me at the park and brought me here. The next day, I was summoned by our madam, who told me that I would not leave the premises until next year.
“Being a newcomer, my customers only came at night to have sex with me.
“So far, I have slept with seven different men before I discovered I was pregnant. I was told that after delivery, I would be paid handsomely and that if I decided to leave after then, I could. My pregnancy is in its second.
A police spokesperson said authorities were working to resettle the rescued young women.
