Breaking - Buhari considers Southwest, eyes Ambode, Fayemi for 2023 presidency

ABUJA – A former state governor and an incumbent have emerged as early favourites in the search by power brokers in the Presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for a successor to President Muhammadu . They are immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and returnee Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.
A credible source close to Aso Presidential Villa who spoke recently with Nigeraireporter disclosed that Buhari is unlikely to be succeeded by a fellow Muslim, adding that the party would most likely field a qualified and marketable Christian from the South-West as presidential candidate in 2023, with a Northern Muslim as running mate.
“Ambode and Fayemi are seriously being considered,” the source said, adding: “Ambode is one man to watch despite the troubles now. He is well loved in the party and even in the Villa by the kitchen cabinet.”
On Fayemi, the source said: “Fayemi has issues. The conservatives in the Presidency are not comfortable with Fayemi’s appointments in Ekiti.”
The source described Ambode’s current limited visibility as an advantage. “At this stage visibility is a minus,” he said.
He also described Ambode’s lack of connect among South-West power brokers as another advantage, saying: “This is even better. Obj (Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo) also didn’t connect with anyone in the SW in 1999.”

Fayemi Inspects Damages Cause By Erosion In Ekiti, Promises Quick Intervention

Fayemi Inspects Damages Cause By Erosion In Ekiti, Promises Quick Intervention

His Excellency,  Dr Kayode Fayemi inspecting the Ureje Bridge collapse site on Ado-Ikole Road. On the Governor’s entourage were Commissioners for Works, Mr Sola Adebayo, Environment, Mr Gbenga Agbeyo and the Special Adviser on Roads & Infrastructure, Hon. Sunday Adunmo.

The bridge collapsed due to heavy rainfall that caused an erosion in the area. Ekiti State Government has since begun immediate palliative efforts within hours of the incident to keep the major link road motorable until the rains subside.

The Governor, in a tweet from his personal handle @kfayemi, had assured the residents that reconstruction would commence once the rains are over. The Ado-Ikole road is under federal jurisdiction.

Growing poverty: NGO urges media to stand up against criminalisation of petty offences

The Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), a Non-governmental Organisation, has urged the media to stand-up against the criminalisation of petty offences, which affect the poor more than any other group.

poverty

The Head, Enugu Office of PRAWA, Mrs Chioma Anuna, made the call during a Media Capacity Building Workshop on Decriminalisation and Declassification of Petty Offences in Nigeria for journalists in Enugu on Wednesday.

Anuna said that criminalisation of petty offences, such as prostitution, common nuisance, alms begging, street trading and environmental offences, by state governments and law enforcement agencies had continued to breed and deepen poverty among the poor and vulnerable.

She said: “In this regard, laws that criminalise petty offences have the effect of punishing, segregating, controlling and undermining the dignity of persons on the basis of their socio-economic status.

“By restricting the ability of individuals to engage in life-sustaining activities, particularly for those living in poverty, petty offences infringe on the autonomy of persons, further degrading their right to human dignity.

“The enforcement of these laws also perpetuate the stigmatisation of poverty by mandating a criminal justice response to what are essentially socio-economic issues.

“In this regard, the criminalisation of petty offences reinforces discriminatory attitudes against marginalised persons especially the poor and vulnerable.

“The criminalisation of petty offences contributes to discrimination and marginalisation by criminalising poverty, homelessness and unemployment.

This development had an impact on the poorest and most marginalised persons in our communities.’’

She noted that there was a need to improve awareness on the impact of excessive custodial sentences as it relates to petty offences, including applying standards and principles of human rights in protecting the poor and promoting equality and fairness.

Speaking, Mr Monday Emeka, Public Relations Officer of Nigerian Correctional Service, Enugu State Command, said that the new Correctional Service Act signed by President Muhammadu Buhari clearly spelt out need to have non-custodian programmes. Emeka said: “Law enforcement agencies and the general public should help us know that it is not every petty or minor offence that requires that the offender be put in custodian centres (prisons).

“There should be alternatives for handling petty issues especially going with the cost implication of keeping a person in correctional custody to the government, family members, friends and even the individuals involved especially when he or she is poor.

’’ Highlights of the workshop were open discussion and group work as well as the formation of media network to checkmate issues of criminalisation of petty offences within Enugu State and its environs.

Journalists from print and electronic media as well as online media attended the workshop.

Lagos caution developers against buildings without approvals

Gov. Sanwo-Olu
The Lagos State Government has cautioned real estate developers in the state not to build without necessary approvals, saying that abiding by the state planning and building control regulations is the right way to build.

He noted that developers as critical stakeholders in the built environment ought to know the importance of building right as doing so would help in preventing building collapse.

He urged members of the association to imbibe the culture of building right by using quality materials, obtaining both planning and construction permits before commencing any building construction project in the state.

Salako said it was of utmost importance for the association to collaborate with the state government especially in the area of monitoring and compliance to prevent building collapse in the State.

According tohim, “The security of lives and property of the people of Lagos state is the priority of the Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration in the state. Consequently, we will continue to embrace collaborations and partnerships to further this objective” he said.

The Commissioner emphasized that members of the association could avail themselves of Lagos state Physical Planning Permit and Building Control Appeals Committee which was created for people to seek redress on issues bothering on infractions in the built environment.

Earlier, the General Secretary of the Association, Mr. Mutairu Olumegbon, said that the association, which had been in existence for over a decade, had always partnered with the state  government in the area of  building habitable homes for Lagosians, adding that the purpose of the visit was to further strengthen the existing relationship.

He assured that members of the association would not build without getting the necessary approvals from the government as its enforcement team was strong.

“Our association has a task force that monitors every building construction site of its members” he said.

Ebonyi to introduce whistle blowing against cultism

Executive Governor of Ebonyi state, Dr. David Umahi
Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state yesterday reiterated the commitment of his administration towards the eradication of cultism through the introduction of “whistleblowing” against cultism at all levels in the state.

The Governor stated this during the celebration of Nigeria’s Independence and Ebonyi at 23 at Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.

The Ebonyi State Governor who stated that though the state government through its empowerment programmes had done so much in ensuring that the state was liberated from cultism added that with the introduction of whistleblowing the fight will become more effective and result-oriented.
In his words, “We must continue to fight against cultism but let me say that the war against cultism has not started in Ebonyi State.

“To the general public, it appears that we have won the war but to me, it appears that there is going to be a very intensive war against cultism in Ebonyi as there will be whistleblowers in this.

“When you have identification of anybody doing cultism and you get us through whistleblowing, you will have a reward and through this means, we will completely eliminate cultism in our society”.

The Governor had in his first tenure declared zero tolerance for cultism in the state as he urged those in practice of cultism to desist and denounce the same at Christ Embassy Church.

Be careful in harassing young Nigerians as cyber fraudsters, FG warns security agencies

The Minister of Communications, Dr Isa Ibrahim Pantami has warned security agencies in the country to be cautious in profiling of young Nigerians with computing devices as fraudsters.

Pantami, minister, Buhari, cyber fraudsters
Dr. Isa Ibrahim Pantami, Minister of Communication
The minister who gave the warning on Tuesday in Abuja said the ministry is worried over the widespread harassment of young Nigerians with personal computers, tablets or phablets in public places.
He noted that the unfortunate turn of events is coming at a time when we celebrate the growing and bubbling technology eco-system in Nigeria that enables young persons to learn various skills ranging from software engineering to varied forms of entrepreneurship by simply accessing online tools and content on these devices.

He warned that the move would be counterproductive and cripple the economy if the security agencies concerned do not restrain from such act.

‘‘The attention of the Federal Ministry of Communications has been drawn to reports of widespread harassment of young Nigerians with personal computers, tablets or phablets in public places.
‘‘These reports indicate that young persons are generally regarded as fraudsters by officers of security agencies if found with such devices in their possession and subsequently subjected to varied forms of harassments and in some cases outright extortion.

‘‘The Ministry notes with dismay, this unfortunate turn of events as we celebrate the growing and bubbling technology eco-system in Nigeria that enables young persons to learn various skills ranging from software engineering to varied forms of entrepreneurship by simply accessing online tools and content on these devices.

‘‘We are aware that several other persons have engaged in nefarious activities utilising computers and similar devices, we must, however, be careful not to paint all young Nigerians with a similar brush.
At this time, we commend the efforts of some law enforcement agencies, particularly the approach of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in intelligence gathering and subsequent apprehension of these unscrupulous elements who use computing systems to commit cybercrimes.
‘‘It should be further noted that many young Nigerians have contributed significantly to the impressive growth of the Nigerian economy and have created employment for youth in Nigeria.

The digital economy in Nigeria has continued to soar thereby giving impetus to the growth of ICT as a major segment of the economy.
It would, therefore, be counterproductive to stifle this sector of the economy by labelling every young Nigerian with a computing device as a fraudster. ‘
‘It is in this light that the FederalMinistry of Communications frowns at the current profiling and harassment of young Nigerians and therefore admonishes security agencies to be circumspect in these situations.
We understand the need for proactivity to protect the society, however, this must be done credibly while recognising the fundamental human rights of every citizen of Nigeria.

If this situation goes unchecked, it will dampen the vigorous attempt at diversifying the economy and rather push more young energies underground with catastrophic consequences.
The minister further pledged to work closely with parastatals under his ministry’s supervision, particularly the

National Information Technology Development Agencies (NITDA), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to address the gray areas.
He also promised to work with relevant security agencies, Hubs and all groups promoting digital capacity building in Nigeria to ensure that such incidents are completely eliminated and that all hands are on deck to promote the growth of a healthy eco-system supportive of young Nigerians and creating opportunities to harness their energies.

‘‘The Federal Ministry of Communications will keep working assiduously to foster the growth of a knowledge-based economy and facilitate ICT as a key tool in the transformation of Nigeria in the areas of job creation, economic growth and transparency in governance,’’ he said.

Breaking - He was my best friend, love of my life –Khashoggi’s fiancee

Jamal Khashoggi’s fiancee Hatice Cengiz speaks at a memorial for the murdered Saudi journalist, saying: “He was my best friend, he was the love of my life. I still love him.”

Jamal Khashoggi
Murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi
The vigil in Istanbul took place near the Saudi Arabian consulate where Khashoggi was killed a year ago.

Cengiz had been waiting outside. “Last year I was standing here. I was a girl in love, waiting for my man to come out of the consulate. “We wanted to go to dinner.
We wanted to invite our friends to our wedding.

“I want to know what happened to his body. I want his friends to be released from jails. “I want those in power are held accountable for their actions.
“All the world’s eyes are on the kingdom (Saudi Arabia), and this issue will follow them everywhere,”
she said. On Oct. 2, 2018, Jamal Khashoggi, a U.S.-based journalist, and critic of Saudi Arabia’s government walked into the country’s consulate in Istanbul, where he was murdered.
In the months since, conflicting narratives have emerged over who was responsible, how he died, and what happened to his remains. Saudi officials have said the journalist was killed in a “rogue operation” by a team of agents sent to persuade him to return to the kingdom, while Turkish officials have said the agents acted on orders from the highest levels of the Saudi government.
In the latest development, a United Nations special rapporteur concluded that Khashoggi was “the victim of a deliberate, premeditated execution, an extrajudicial killing for which the state of Saudi Arabia is responsible”.
She also found there was “credible evidence” that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other high-level officials were individually liable.
The Saudi government, which denies the prince was involved, rejected the report. As a prominent Saudi journalist, he covered major stories, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the rise of the late al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, for various Saudi news organizations.
For decades, the 59-year-old was close to the Saudi royal family and also served as an adviser to the government. But he fell out of favour and went into self-imposed exile in the U.S. in 2017.
From there, he wrote a monthly column in The Washington Post in which he criticized the policies of Prince Mohammed, who had become the kingdom’s de facto ruler.
In his first column for the Post, Khashoggi said he feared being arrested in an apparent crackdown on dissent overseen by the prince.
Khashoggi first visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 28 September to obtain a Saudi document stating that he was divorced, so that he could marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.
But he was told he would have to return to pick up the document and arranged to come back on Oct. 2.
“He did not believe that something bad could happen on Turkish soil,” Ms. Cengiz wrote in the Post. Ms. Cengiz accompanied him to the entrance of the consulate on Oct. 2.
He was last seen on CCTV footage entering the building at 13:14 local time.   Khashoggi’s killing was internationally condemned and caused a diplomatic crisis between Saudi Arabia and some of its closest allies, including the U.S.

After the murder was confirmed by the Saudis, U.S. President Donald Trump described it as the “worst cover-up in history”. However, he defended U.S. ties to the kingdom, a key trading partner.

This response was widely derided by senators in Congress who point the finger at Prince Mohammed and want the US to take tougher action against Saudi Arabia by halting arms sales.

According to U.S. media reports, the CIA – whose boss, Gina Haspell, has heard the consulate audio recordings – concluded that Prince Mohammed ordered Khashoggi’s killing. Mr. Trump denied that.

The U.S., Canada, France, and the UK all levied sanctions against 18 Saudis allegedly linked to the killing.

The Saudi crown prince was not among them. Germany, Finland, and Denmark were among the European nations to cancel arms deals with Saudi Arabia after the killing.

The Nigerian Army says it has rescued some civilians from Boko Haram captivity and recovered weapons from the insurgents during an attack in Gubio, Borno State, this week.
In a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, Aminu Iliyasu, Army Operations Media Coordinator, said the Sector 3 was supported by the Air Task Force of the Operation Lafiya Dole to successfully repel the attack which occurred between Sunday and Tuesday.
According to him, two insurgents were neutralised, while one gun truck, two AK-47 rifles and one anti-aircraft gun were recovered.
“Additionally, 51 civilians hitherto held hostage by the criminals were rescued during the encounter,” said Mr Iliyasu, a colonel.
“The troops continue to dominate the area with fighting/clearing patrols, ambush, raids as well as cordon and search operations.
Mr Iliyasu also said the army arrested a pickup truck conveying three women, 15 men, and three rustled cows during a clearance operation at Mada in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno.
He said the claim by the suspects that they were of the Shuwa extraction was refuted by the locals in the area, adding that none of the suspects could speak any of the local languages.
Mr Iliyasu said a preliminary investigation revealed that one of the suspects and a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) operating in the state had been communicating at various times.
He added that the investigation further revealed that the suspect was on WhatsApp chat platform with the NGO.
The army’s claim comes as the Nigerian military launched a crackdown on some non-governmental organisations in the North-East, accusing them of aiding the insurgents.

Champions League: Owen, Nicholas predict Lille vs Chelsea, Liverpool vs Red Bull

Former Liverpool striker, Michael Owen, has tipped Lille to play a draw against Chelsea in tonight’s UEFA Champions League fixture at Stade Pierre Mauroy.
He also predicted Liverpool to beat Red Bull Salzburg in today’s Champions League at Anfield.
Writing in his column for BetVictor, Owen said: “Lille have not won in their last nine home games in European competition and both they and Chelsea lost their opening group game without scoring.
“Both sides will be looking to kick-start their Champions League campaign, but I feel they will have to settle for a point apiece in northern France.”
Commenting on the Liverpool vs Red Bull, Owen said: “Liverpool maintained their perfect domestic record at Bramall Lane at the weekend but, having lost at Napoli on Matchday One, the holders need to beat Salzburg at Anfield to get their Champions League defence back on track.
“The Reds are unbeaten in their last 22 home European ties and have not conceded in the last five of those games.
“The Austrians can score goals and put six past Genk on Matchday One, but I hope to see another successful European Anfield night for Jurgen Klopp’s side.”
Meanwhile, former Arsenal star, Charlie Nicholas, has backed Frank Lampard’s Chelsea to earn a point at Lille in their Champions League fixture at Stade Pierre Mauroy on Wednesday night.
He also predicted Liverpool to beat Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League at Anfield tonight.
“This is a very awkward tie,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“I am trying to work out how Frank Lampard goes about this. When is the right time to put all of these youngsters in together? If he can use them, he would much prefer to use them at home.
“After being on a high, you do not want to flip the switch and raise question marks.
“He will go with a solid base I think for that reason. Lille drew 1-1 away at Nice at the weekend and are sitting pretty comfortable in fourth, so this is a test for Chelsea. I think they may get something from this, but it will be a more experienced Chelsea side that we see.”
Speaking on Liverpool vs Red Bull, Nicholas said: “I remember Red Bull Salzburg from them playing Celtic a few years back.
“There was a lot going on with the brand and funding – they had to be building for a few years. They are going to one of the grounds with the best atmosphere in Europe on Champions League nights. Liverpool are getting the job done at the moment.
“If I were Jurgen Klopp I would change a couple of things. Joe Gomez could come in and James Milner may get a start. Adam Lallana could get an opportunity, too. It will be a very comfortable night, regardless.”
The kick-off time for all the matches is 8pm.

Champions League: Zidane explains why he substituted Courtois against Club Brugge

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, has given reasons he replaced goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with Alphonse Areola at half-time, during their 2-2 draw with Club Brugge on Tuesday.

Courtois conceded twice in the opening 45 minutes and did not appear after the interval.
Zidane told reporters after the match: “Courtois is in a bad way and could not continue for the second half.
“He is the Real Madrid goalkeeper alongside Areola.
“Everyone can have an opinion; I am not going to get involved. We all need to be ready, like he was in the past three matches. I am not worried at all. He wants to do well.
“We can blame Thibaut, but here we are all in this together and I am the main culprit. For this, I am happy with the second half reaction. At half-time, I said if we carried on like that, we would lose the match and we had 45 minutes to change the result.
“We produced a bad first half but, in the second, we had a better attitude, went in search of the victory and changed the match. We had more heart and courage.”

Nigerian troops arrest suspects in Borno, uncover chats with NGO

The Nigerian Army says it has stepped up operations nationwide to ensure a peaceful and conducive atmosphere for all citizens and residents during the peak of the year.
Col. Aminu Iliyasu, Army Operations Media Coordinator, in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, said the troops arrested a pickup truck conveying three adult females, 15 adult males and three rustled cows during a clearance operation at Mada in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.
He said that the claim by the suspects that they were of the Shuwa extraction was refuted by the locals in the area, adding that none of the suspects could speak any of the local languages.
Iliyasu said preliminary investigation revealed that one of the suspects and a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) operating in the state had been communicating at various times.
He added that investigation further revealed that the suspect was on WhatsApp chat platform with the NGO.
Iliyasu said that troops in the various operational theatres across the country had continued to decimate and frustrate activities of criminal elements in line with the resolve of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai.
He also disclosed that the Sector 3 supported by the Air Task Force of the Operation Lafiya Dole had successfully repelled an attack on Gubio in Borno between Sunday and Tuesday.
According to him, two insurgents were neutralised, while one gun truck, two AK-47 rifles and one anti-aircraft guns were recovered.
“Additionally, 51 civilians hitherto held hostage by the criminals were rescued during the encounter.
“The troops continue to dominate the area with fighting/clearing patrols, ambushes, raids as well as cordon and search operations.
“Similarly, troops, acting on timely information also arrested four male suspects with large consignments of dried fish intended for delivery to the criminal insurgents.
“All four suspects are currently undergoing interrogation where they are giving useful information,’’ he said.
Iliyasu said that in Yobe, troops discovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along a route in Buni Gari in Gujba Local Government Area and safely donated them.
He said that a joint operation with the police had yielded positive results in Cross River and Lagos states in recent times.
He quoted the chief of army staff as reassuring the public of the unwavering resolve of the army to safeguard the territorial integrity of the country with the support of civil authority.
“The Nigeria army hereby requests our good and law abiding citizens to go about their normal economic activities without fear of molestation.
“The populace is equally requested to please assist the army with any useful information that will assist in our operational efforts aimed at ridding the society of criminal elements and other miscreants,” he said.

Champions League: Nigerian striker reveals why he did Ronaldo celebration against Real Madrid

Club Brugge’s Emmanuel Dennis has revealed his love for Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, made him perform his celebration against Real Madrid.
Dennis scored a brace, as they held Zinedine Zidane’s side to a 2-2 draw in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League fixture.
After bagging the memorable first-half goals at Santiago Bernabeu, Dennis decided to troll Madrid supporters with Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siii’ celebration.
“Yes, I did a Cristiano Ronaldo goal celebration when I scored. I’ve been a Cristiano fan forever and I was very upset when he left Madrid. So I decided that if I scored in the Bernabeu tonight that’s what I’d do.
“Everyone expected them to beat us easily. We prepared for them, we believed and we had a good feeling.
“We took the lead with two goals, and obviously it would have been better to have beaten them too. I am a little bit disappointed in a way, but also happy that we won a point against a big team,” Dennis told reporters after the game.

BREKING - 2000th day of Chibok girls in captivity

President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and some of the rescued Chibok girls.

Today is exactly 2,000 days since the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, on April 14, 2014.

The town of Chibok has never been the same since the infamous abduction of schoolgirls that attracted global attention to it over five years ago.

While some of the schoolgirls have been found, at least 113 are still missing, and it is not yet clear if they are still alive.

It is also not clear whether they have been married off, or under whose custody they are, considering the changes that occurred in the ranks of the Boko Haram, the violent group that abducted them during the sole leadership of Abubakar Shekau.

Hours after the abduction on April 14, 57 of the girls found their way back home, and some years later, a few others escaped captivity, while government negotiated with the abductors and freed over 100.

A group, the Abducted Girls Parents’ Movement for Rescue, in its relentless effort to secure freedom of the remaining 113 captives, has been reaching out to relevant authorities and non-governmental organisations that played one role or the other in the previous negotiations.

Women leader of the group, Mrs Yana Galang, whose daughter is among the 113 still in captivity, lamented that concerned authorities are allegedly not much concerned about freeing their daughters. “We were frequently being invited to Abuja for talks while government was facilitating negotiations that led to the freedom of those over 100 girls,” she said. “But since a batch of 83 girls was released two years ago, nobody has ever contacted us again for any talks about rescuing the remaining ones,” she said. “I have suffered a lot from insurgency,” Rachael Daniel, mother of Rose who is still in captivity, said. “My husband, Daniel, was first killed along Dikwa highway.

And later, my daughter, Rose Daniel, 17, was kidnapped at GSS Chibok. “Life is frustrating; I think life is not fair to me; I am always depressed,” she said. Mr Ayuba Alamson doubles as a guardian of his abducted sister and spokesman for parents of Chibok girls.

The sister, Hadiza Kwagui, was, however, among the first set of escapees while been led into Sambisa forest by their abductors on the fateful day. Mr Alamson expressed another form of grief and dejection suffered by the freed girls and their parents, following government’s alleged failure to fulfil its promise of sponsoring their education.

His sister, Hadiza, sat for her secondary school examination, full of hope that government was sponsoring her higher education. “Unfortunately, since they wrote their WAEC and NECO at Bethel International School in Jos, they have been abandoned till date,” Alamson said.

According to him, “In fact, Hadiza is in the village now and some of her friends have gotten married out of frustration. Some of these girls are now farming in the village despite what we heard that they had been offered scholarships to study up to degree level,” he lamented.

However, Yana Galang, who is the woman leader of the parents’ association of the abducted Chibok girls, thanked the federal government for securing the release of more than 100 of the abducted schoolgirls, but said those who are yet to see their daughters are still grieving. She said her daughter, Rifkatu Galam, is still with the insurgents, adding “My daughter was 18 when the abductors took her away.”

Life in Chibok Bad roads and multiple military check points make the journey to Chibok quite frustrating. Visitors are usually made to disembark from their vehicles and walk through road blocks as soldiers insist on identification and clear destination of visitors.

A highly militarised town, Chibok is hosting the headquarters of the 28 Task Force Brigade, which controls a large security area that extends to Northern Adamawa along the Cameroonian border.

The condition of the road worsens as travellers move closer to the town.  During a visit by our reporter, the first check point had been taken over by flood.

Near the checkout, a truck conveying water to soldiers got stuck in the mud and a military truck was dispatched to evacuate the content. “Chibok is the centre of erosion due to neglect,” a resident of the town who identified himself as Sam, said. “We don’t have roads here despite the fame we enjoy,” he added. In March 2015, almost one year after the infamous abduction which was trailed by counter accusations over the authenticity of the incident, then Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala laid the foundation for new classrooms at GSS Chibok on behalf of then President Goodluck Jonathan, in an effort to rebuild the school destroyed in the course of the kidnapping. Soon after, controversy trailed the N500 million raised by the Jonathan government under the Safe School Initiative (SSI) for rebuilding the school.

This was followed by a petition to the EFCC by a non-governmental organisation which alleged that the money had been diverted. When our reporter visited Chibok recently and attempted to gain access to the heavily guarded school, he was advised to obtain written permission from the military high command.

And when he approached the 28 Task Force Brigade in the town to see the commander, a soldier made series of phone calls to his superiors and then said there was nothing they could do because the school was under the custody of a different commander.

However, findings reveal that as at April 2016 which marked the second anniversary of the abduction of the girls, construction had not started on the site even though hundreds of blocks were piled in preparation for the project.

But, by the end of 2017, the new structures built by army engineers at the site had reached roof level, giving hope to the community that lessons would resume any moment. In the interim, the Borno State Government had approved that lessons should resume at the Central Primary School, Chibok, where the secondary students share space with primary school pupils and students of Junior Secondary School, Chibok.

This was when it was evident that the project was far from completion. Under the arrangement which still persists, students of GSS Chibok and those in primary school take lessons in the morning while classes for JSS Chibok hold in the afternoon.

In an interview, Bulama Madu who was the vice principal of the girls’ school when the attack took place until his retirement in 2016, called on the federal government to fast-track the project to enable the students return to the permanent site.

A parent, Lawal Zanna, who is the secretary of Chibok Girls’ Parents’ Association, said they are still in grief as 112 girls remained in captivity. “We have lost communication with the government. Nobody talks to the parents any more.

After freeing 107 girls, government promised to secure the release of the remaining ones but nothing happened yet. “We have been waiting for years, some of the parents have died while  waiting while many others are now ill,” he said.

About the rescued girls Daily Trust reports that many of the Chibok girls freed from Boko Haram were enrolled for a foundation programme at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, under a federal government sponsorship.

Some of them were also reportedly ‘adopted’ by some people and taken abroad even though very little has been heard of them of recent.

When contacted, AUN’s Communications Director, Daniel Okereke, said he did not have details on the status of the girls, adding that the officer in charge of the programme had travelled out of the country.

He promised to get back to our reporter but did not. However, an insider told Daily Trust that the girls were placed on a beginner course, saying some of them have been upgraded to intermediate and advanced classes depending on performance.

It was however gathered that 13 of the girls have voluntarily withdrawn from the programme and went back home, a development which was confirmed by secretary of the parents association, Lawal Zanna, who said no reason was given for the withdrawal and that attempt to convince the girls’ parents to take them back was not successful.

Speaking on the Chibok girls’ issue, one of the leaders of the #BringBackOurGirls (#BBOG) movement, Florence Ozor, said the group’s commitment in respect of the girls has not changed.

“It gets more depressing as the days go by without any word from the government about the abducted, including Leah Sharibu (who was taken away from a school in Dapchi, Yobe State) and others,” she said. “We still have our daily sit-outs at the Unity Fountain, and we still do our countdowns.

BBOG has not in any way abated in its quests and will not stop until the girls are back,” she added.

BREAKING: Sokoto election petition tribunal dismisses all preliminary objections

The Sokoto State Governorship election petition tribunal has dismissed all preliminary objections brought before the tribunal by all parties in the matter. Justice Abbas Bawale-led tribunal dismissed preliminary objections filed by the PDP, APC and INEC.

The tribunal is now on a 30-minute recess before the substantial matter would be dealt with.

Nigeriaireporter had reliably gathered that the judgement would be delivered in Abuja.

No reason was given on why the judgement would be delivered in Abuja, but it was generally believed that it was due to security threat.
